The trick behind the Ethane design is that all complex functionality, including routing, naming, policy declaration and security checks are performed by a central controller. A first implementation of Ethane was built and deployed in Fall of 2006. The deployment consisted of one controller, 19 switches and it managed the traffic from over 300 wired hosts and many more wireless.
